is to tie governor mitt romney -- sorry, tie governor romney to the ryan budget. and as one top democrat put it to me, the idea is to make the case that romney/ryan in electing that ticket means americans would be electing the intellectual leader of the house republicans, as one person put it, that paul ryan is the intellectual leader of the house republicans and he should not be able tonight to duck from any specifics. so, again, we will hear that word, specifics. and look for the vice president to try to get paul ryan to talk about budget details in this debate tonight, wolf. >> jessica, has the vice president done his tour of the actual debate hall yet? >> reporter: he has. he did that tour a little earlier today before 2:00 p.m. he sat in the chair. he looked at the monitor where you get your time cues. and i'm told all that went smoothly. he also before he boarded the plane today leaving from delaware he talked to reporters and he was asked what is his strategy. take a listen to what he said. >> i'm looking forward to it. nice of you guys to be here. are you on the plane with us? all ri

's in favor of the romney-ryan ticket. why is there all of this boxing terminology going on? well, take a look at this. this is one of the posters here for sale at center college. this is being set up with a lot of boxing terminology. perhaps that's part of it. also, suzanne, i wanted to tell you a little bit about that photo that we put up there earlier. if we can show that again because that's something that only cnn has. you can only see it right here. it's an exclusive look. >> if you don't recognize the guy on the right, that is chris van holland. he is the ranking democrat. the top democrat on the house budget committee. he knows paul ryan because he is the budget chairman of that committee. you're seeing the back of the head of shayla murray. that is the communications director for the vice president. >> she's been playing martha are aedditz. the biden team went to great lengths to replicate the conditions that the vice president will face here in danville, kentucky. that table, which is a semicircle with a small circle that the moderator sits at is exactly as it is here. that's very di

to draw contrasts, not only between the president and mitt romney, but also between paul ryan and mitt romney. he knows a lot about paul ryan on medicare, social security and also i was told, foreign policy. he will try to talk about that. >> it's interesting, john, you talk about the generational divide between these two but unlike the presidential debate where you had a former law professor and former ceo, these are two guys with blue collar backgrounds and have spent a lot of time out there campaigning. how noticeable do you think that's going to be? >> it takes one to know one. these are the two beer drinkers in this race. the president and governor romney, no insult intended, can seem a bit elite, detached sometimes. these are more blue collar guys. they're comfortable in an irish pub, in a vfw post. that's their job on the campaign trail, go out and get the working class voters who could be key especially in some of the idaho in west battleground states. stylistically, even though there's an age difference, they are somewhat alike, these two. and that's what's so interesting. lib

in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party make-up of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on the other hand, says it's pleased with the numbers. joining us now, jim acosta with the romney campaign in newport news, virginia and on the phone, dan lothian with president obama's campaign. jim, you're on the trail with the romney campaign. what's the reaction

, not vice presidents, but romney has momentum, bit of a breeze at his back. can paul ryan continue building that momentum or could joe biden be more passionate than the president in the first presidential debate and stop it? >> let's talk about the numbers, john. mitt romney still getting post debate bounce. you can't say any more that debates don't matter. the new cnn poll, poll of polls, mitt romney has a slight lead with likely voters, 48% to 47%. his performance certainly showed that you can't say it doesn't matter anymore. there is no bigger swing state than ohio, where you are. >> reporter: the history tells you no republican has ever been elected president without winning the state of ohio. can you do the math and have romney win without this state? yes. is it likely? no. before the debate some polls had him down as many as nine points in ohio. new cnn poll row leased last night has him down four, 51-47. another group, american research group show ed romney up a point in ohio. no question. just like in the national polls, a bit of a boost. romney is up in the suburbs, up among indepe

paul ryan stands on the issues, where romney stands on the issue, but this camp was all about kind of gearing towards a mock debate. he did one each night the last four nights bringing him a a total of at least half a dozen he's done. 90-minute mock debates very much like we'll see tonight, ashleigh. >> called a gaffe machine, among other things. what has he been doing, or at least what has the campaign been doing or allowing us to know about, anyway, to try to minimize the gaffes that could lead to what john king referred to, internet moments that live forever? >> reporter: that's right. when you think of joe biden, he's almost synonymous with gaffes. things we see when he's on the campaign trail. certainly his words sort of trip him up and become these moments. the thing is, and i've asked his folks about this. they sort of say they're not really worried about it. i think certainly when you're dealing with joe biden there's always kind of that in the back of your head, but actually, if you look at his debate performances and he's had many on the national stage, these gaffes don't

what joe biden has said in public. he has been studying that ryan plan even though it's not a romney plan, and mitt romney has sort of distanced himself a bit from some things that are in the ryan plan. you can just sort of see biden planning to kind of tie the two of them together around a plan and say, look, this is not for the middle class. it will ruin the middle class, and you know that's coming. >> you're moderating the second presidential debate coming up on october 16th, which is very exciting for all of us here at cnn. how are you preparing? >> oh, man. every way i can. you know, i'm listening. we have a great team, the folks you never see on the camera here at cnn, that bring me research stuff that say, hey, there's this, there's that, here's the other thing. it's a little bit of everything, and you're also just sort of while this builds up, and the president will go out and do this. you're just trying to maintain a kind of zen level here so when you go out, it's just a good substantive debate and exchange between the two guys. >> well, we're excited for you. we know you'll
